Ashlong Cabin

Built across a stream in rural Essex is the Ashlong Cabin. The cabin is supported by ground screws, enabling a strong foundation which doesn’t use any carbon intensive concrete. Inspired by Scandanavian architecture, the cabin has a triangular roof peaking slightly off-centre and is framed with 5 x 5 inch Douglas fir. To contrast the chunky timber frame we opted for a black finish on the cladding, reminiscent of the styling of barns found in the region. The internal area of the house is 15 square metres plus a 4 square metre mezzanine, complete with stag-oak railing and a skylight. The front facade is packed full of custom made windows and double French doors provide the entrance. To the side of the house overlooking the field is a bird’s hide window and in front we constructed a large deck for lounging / summer BBQs.
