Lyneham Treehouse
Mid way up a big sycamore tree sits this forest cabin-styled timber-framed treehouse. The roof leans out over both front and side balconies to give maximum weather protection and views in all directions. Passing by our custom-made french doors, complete with branchy details, you turn the corner to the side balcony where you can reach over to touch the tree as it branches upwards. Going further around, you can enter the treehouse through a side door. Roundwood / branchy timbers comprise the balustrade and details of the treehouse. It’s most prominent feature, the access, is a 5m high fully timber spiral staircase built entirely by hand. To build the spiral, we sourced a mega oak Log and a load of cleft oak from the forest at Westonbirt arboretum. We fitted 22 Douglas fir steps spiralling around the log, and supported each step with a cleft-oak brace notched into it. Longer bits of cleft oak were fitted to interlink each step and provide a structure for the railing to be built onto. The railing itself was made from thin strips of Douglas fir and the top handrail was 4 strips laminated together. Every piece of wood was locally sourced, worked by hand and finished naturally, without varnish.
